Self Portrait In Progress

This represents my second visit with this piece. Its hard to really look at myself for a long time so I tend to work in 30 to 40 minute intervals. This is a drawing of me drawing myself. I guess that is the definition of a self portrait done from life.

Dallas Airport Shoeshine Lady

During last years many travels, I had the opportunity to spend a little time in the Dallas Texas airport. The light was interesting. I liked the female shoeshine person and her female client. I had my shoes shined once t0 photograph the project (the last roll of film I developed myself). Its nice to watch their hands move.

Bar Chatter In Progress

Where I am now. As I look at this series, I'm noticing that my contrasts are getting more extreme. That's not a bad thing, in my opinion, because we are told that contrast generates attention. As I have said many many times before, I love painting events largely because of the experience.
The start.

Under Guard

Usually a person in custody is brought before the judge with a guard in tow. The defendant is required to keep his hands behind him for the guard to see. This protects members of the public, the judge and to the dismay of many the lawyers.

Me Filming Waves Part two

This is the result of the second visit with this small painting. I think I should have left well enough alone. I will post the finished version later.

Me Filming Waves

When I'm out shooting I normally carry three cameras. Lately Pam has "borrowed" one of them to take pictures of me in my element. I was in Carmel, California filming waves in tide pools. If I remember correctly, I had to run from an unexpected big wave. This is what I got in the first session with this piece. In the next post you will see that I at times don't leave well enough alone.

Spirited Conversation

I'm still exploring this painting. The top picture is what the painting currently looks like. I'm going to take one more stab at this and leave it alone.

Your Poison?

During the holidays I normally have to attend various lunches to celebrate the season. We had finished dining and I snapped this picture on the way out of the restaurant. I call it "your poison" because of all of the liquor bottles in the background.

When Light is Yellow

In December of last year I spent a few days in Columbus Ohio. I didnt get to spend much time out shooting but I did manage to get a few shots in after the conference. This shot was taken just as the sun was leaving the city.

Self Portrait In Progress

As you can see from the angles, I'm painting this portrait from life. Its hard working on a portrait using the mirror. Plus I have to find the same shirt each time to make sure each painting session is consistent. This one isn't as mean looking or scary as the others that I have done. I must be in a more comfortable place than I was last year.

Tomatoe Reflection

I try to work from life often. Its a challenge trying to stay in the same spot or to have the same vantage point at any given time. I love painting fruit as well as making it part of my daily food consumption.

Another Groove On

I have painted this in both watercolor and acrylic. Both have their virtues but I'm still contemplating on this piece. I'm trying to capture the gestures of the musicians. A series is always good to work in for me. The series allows me to explore mistakes and appreciate them. Some would say maybe "repeat the same mistakes". Its all about the process.

Chicago Transit

When I first tackled this piece I worked in watercolor. With pastel I think it makes more of a statement or maybe it just has more presence. Its interesting to note the different ways in which I addressed what I thought to be hurdles in both paintings.

Red and Yellow

I will say this much: I struggle with florals. I keep painting them but I'm always super critical because my hand is often too heavy to get them right. This is the first attempt however and I'm determined to get that strong delicacy I found in the actual flower. The piece "Succulent White" (posted above) is one of my favorite florals and probably one of my few successes in this area.

Glass Beach Study

This is a preliminary painting in contemplation of a much larger pastel painting. This shot was taken last year during my annual birthday trip up to Fort Bragg, California. Watercolor is fun in that it is difficult to control what the pigment will do. An added bonus is that you can do what you want with color and if you can wing it it works.

This is one of my last paintings of 2008. I took it during a recent party. When I saw the drinks sitting there waiting for the bartender I had to get this shot. This is the first of about three paintings of this shot.
