Justin In Thought

I finished this off this morning at the gallery. We are in our first weekend of the West Austin Studio Tour. I started this one yesterday. We had quite a few people stroll through the gallery today. I'm still working on my home made surfaces. This is Justin one of my nephews.

Shelter For All Weather

I'm still exploring the scene across the street from where my sister used to live. I really need to go paint on site when I next return to Commerce. This area is a gem. Its quiet and when the light is right the scenery is comforting. I'm still experimenting with the prepared surfaces. They are only 4 by 5 inches; I'm sure a larger surface would be fun too.

Rodeo Study

This year I went to the rodeo with my friend Beverly and her husband. I took a ton of photos. This cowboy was holding on pretty good. I again used by homemade surface.

Reluctant Model

This is a little study for a larger painting. The subject is one of my nephew's twins. Their personalities are so different. One loves the camera and the other is afraid of it. Those eyes just drew me in. I worked on one of my surfaces that I made using Golden's Fine Pumice Gel Medium. It gives the surface a nice abstract quality.

Down A Street

I'm not finished with this one yet. I want to play with the shadow shape in the front lower right and pop out the shadows. This scene is down the street as you look left on the street my sister once lived on.

Food Prep

Another from my recent visit to Manuel's in North Austin. That was one rainy day to be driving wayyyyy up north. I used my own prepared surface for this one. I like the way it takes the pastel.

California Vineyard

This is one of my oil on copper paintings. I don't know the name of the particular vineyard (my bad) but it did get my attention. I have painted this scene in both pastel and oil. I like how some of the copper peeks through the paint. I hope to have it framed and in my gallery for the West Austin Studio Tour coming this month. Available for purchase right now if you like.

The Right Angle

An abstract for a little break from conventional reality. Abstracts come from my brain and emotions so they are harder for me to paint. I paint them for days until I get a word from them.

Pastel Johnson City Sunset

I'm still exploring this image. This is the pastel version. The initial underpainting was in watercolor. The next underpainting was pastel that I covered with alcohol twice to work some of the pastel into the surface. After that I had very little tooth to work with. I do like how the underpainting peeks through. Photo courtesy of Derrick Johnson my personal trainer.

Headed Somewhere

Another family painting to add to the series. One of my nephews about 15 years ago. He was riding his bike and was looking for a way around the legs of the adults sitting around him.
