Botanical I Almost Done

I participated in a painting event about two years ago. We painted musicians as they were playing. People could watch us develop and finish paintings while the group played on. This was a drawing done from one of the photos I took.
Just a little more piddly work and this puppy will be done. Its a lot tighter than I usually work. But its good to change out on occasion.

Masa Botanical in Progress

This is the result of my second session with this piece. I used water washes in an attempt to get better transitions between the values.

ABIA 12/28/08

This one was done at the airport in December. I was waiting to board a plane to Oakland California and noticed this guy reading a book. I don't think he was aware that he was being watched and/or sketched.

Counsel Approach

The different uniforms worn by these defendants are related to their status in the jail. In some of our courts the judges allow the lawyers to stand in line to get their cases called. When the judge is ready to attend to your case they usually say "counsel approach". This is a combination of sketches.

427th

This is one of our newly elected judges. I've had a few cases in his court recently so I took advantage of my time and did a little sketching. This is the posture of many defendants that I have seen approach the bench. Its the lack of regard that comes through in the posture like"whatevah". This was inspired by some of those sketches.

Masa Botanical

This is the watercolor version. The painting surface is "masa paper". I usually ball a fresh sheet up under a stream of cold water. I smooth it out to dry and when it is I apply two coats of gesso. Once dry its a beautiful textured surface to paint on. This is still in progress.

Courtroom Sketch

The time spent in front of the judge is when people are still enough to get a good sketch in. The guards are poised for action and the defendants are usually submissive. The fun part is trying to get the hands behind the back rendered well.

Westin Bar II

Another sketch from the Westin Hotel Bar in Columbus, Ohio. These sketches were usually completed in about 15 mins.

Westin Bar

When in a bar I tend to sketch. This is one of many sketches I did while seated in the bar of the Westin in Columbus Ohio. I could usually sit in a corner and draw without too many distractions. I did however get the attention of a group of elderly people and they had to look through my sketchbook. They were nice people.

Rush Hour in Columbus

During a recent conference in Columbus, Ohio I would go out during lunch and after the class to photograph the area. I have shot many nigh time scenes and I have never encountered the red that I did with these images. It could have been the camera setting who knows. Anyhow its fun to render in pastel. This is still in progress. I will post the finished piece in a day or so.

The Quiet Conversation

When you have a camera around your neck its easy to go unnoticed. I like to grab those moments between people when they are unaware and comfortable in their skin. These are two good friends having an intimate conversation completely unaware of me and my intrusive camera.

Keepers III almost there

I played some more with this. I did some blending of edges and tried to keep it fresh even in the face of me trying to tighten this piece up.

Botanical Garden I in progress

As you can see I multitask a lot with paintings. If I get tight with one I move to another in progress or I will start a new one. This is a current floral that I am working with. This view represents about an hours worth of work. I took this shot in the botanical gardens in San Francisco.

Keepers III

I wanted to ply around with this scene again. Each time I add and subtract various parts of the photo. This is still a little too loose for my taste so I will continue on with it.
