Tail Feathers

We saw these chickens on McDonald Ave in Richmond, California in January. Of course we stopped and I took photos and video. I've been painting them all year.

September Marina Vibe

The bones of this painting were done in ink on site. Color and various media were added later.

Mosaic 1

This piece started out as as gelli print on a "masa" like paper. I later added tempra paint and gel pens. I find abstraction to be difficult but somewhat liberating.

Escaping Light

This painting was started years ago and left in a pile of unfinished works. This year I finished it up with gel pens, etc. It's a painting of Northern California redwoods.

Gated Spaces

This piece started out as what I thought was a failed gelli print. I keep the failures because fresh eyes and time offer a new perspective. I've recently been painting houses in my neighborhood. I added the drawing to the gelli print and kept exploring. I next added Gansai Tambi granulating colors and various gel pens. I endeavored to leave each part of the process visible.

Pier Group Three

This is part of a series that started out as 1, 5 and 15 minute drawings of a scene. After the lesson, I continued to work on them. They were done on Khadi paper using multiple mediums. The subject matter is a marina in Richond, California.

Corner House Before Sunrise

As artists, we all tend to paint our surroundings. Some mornings when I'm heading out for an early morning workout this corner house is illuminated. It reminds me of an Edward Hopper painting. I of course cannot begin to mimic Hopper, but I can add my own spin to it. I've recently picked up many varieties of gel pens and Kuretake Gansai Tambi granulating colors both were used in this series of paintings.

Hopper On Freight

One of my current favorite painters is Edward Hopper. I'm drawn to what I perceive to be the "Aloneness" in his paintings and drawings. This house from my hood reminds me of that imagery. I recently dipped back in to my passion for gel and dip pens. This drawing started out with just the Kuretaki Aurora Violet as the background. I used a dip pen to add the drawing of the house and you know the rest.

Richmond Chick 2

We were on McDonald heading home and I saw these chickens behind a fence. Of course we had to stop for video and photos. This is one of the finished mixed media pieces that I completed of these characters. Many more will follow. Urban chcken farm...what a concept.

Again Three Pears

This is a mixed media monoprint. It started out as a charcoal image transfer. It was later embellished with posca pens etc. I found a bunch of older charcoal notan sketches that I had done for a number of older paintings. I used them as charcoal transfers on the gelli plate.

Mysterious Duo

I'm obsessed with mono prints. I've been playing and experimenting with the geli plate. This print was derived from one of my repurposed plein air sketches and multiple print applications in charcoal and pastel. The pastel and charcoal paint transfers were lifted with acrylic medium and paint.

Self Portrait 2022 #4

I have started doing self portraits on my birthday again. This was the fourth one from last year. This years portraits were done using the blind contour drawing method. They were fun to do and the results were interesting. Once completed, I will share them.

Harvest Portrait

I have been a gardener for years. It's one of my solutions to high vegtable prices and its good to know what is in your food. The entire process from seed to fruit or vegetable is a miracle in many ways. One of the many benefits is the built in still life. I wanted the image to have a graphic feel to it.

Stink Eye

This was a scene before my cousin Fred's wedding years ago. I like to capture images before, during and after a wedding.

Future Fisher

This image was captured at the Richmond Marina. I like the diversity of people and they don't mind being painted and photographed.

Afternoon Crab Special

This is a plein air piece that I completed on my most recent trip to Fort Bragg, California. We were hanging out in the afternoon and these birds were hunting crab. Pam actually "rescued" one and threw it back into the ocean.
