This is the first two stages with this one. I will post the current stage in a few days because I want to let it simmer for a while before calling it done. This is an unusual perspective and a different composition. This is a scene from the Fort Bragg, California area.

McKinney Falls II

The second painting from last Saturdays paint out with some ladies from Plein Air Austin.

Plein Air Upgrade III

The third in the series of ocean sunset paintings.. The original is 5 by 7 inches and painted oil on copper. This is 20 by 24 inches. I think this set of paintings would make a great triptych. I wasn't really married to the colors used in the study.

Plein Air Upgrade I

With this piece I started out with a plein air sketch that I completed this summer. I did two six by 6 by 6 inches paintings and one 5 by 7 incher. Last Friday night I churned this one out. I'm not touching it again. This one is 20 by 20 inches and summarily kicked off the easel.

Crossing

This is a crosswalk in New York. Its amazing how one can fell alone in this type of world. The visual stimulation is numbing.

Back Out Again (fini)

I'm calling this one done. I didn't spend too much more time on it as I wanted to keep some energy in the paint strokes. El Granada, CA which has an excellent seafood place real close to this scene.

Delay Trial Sketch

I will get around to making a painting from these one of these days. I think both watercolor and pastel would be great starts.

Harmony fini

I posted the simmering version of this one on last Thursday. I didn't want to lose the energetic strokes so I just darkened his shirt a bit. I'm calling it done.

Trial #14

I wish I could paint from the bailiff's desk or from behind the bench but that would just distract the jury.

Steep Drop

I like taking pictures of the ocean from a cliff as long as its safe (lessons learned). I think this area is on the Point Reyes National Seashore or Fort Bragg. I used the smooth side of a piece of Canson paper.

Plugged In

This is a Boston cityscape. I liked the fact that this man was completely in his own world plugged in to his own dialogue

Stacks (in progress)

This is a Commerce landscape with hay bales. Photo inspiration taken on a trip this summer. This one I finished last night. I will post it as soon as it is processed.

Harmony

Another one for the music series. I'm almost done but I don't want to lose the current energy I see in it. I just need to refine a few areas. These musicians were photographed during one of our many Pecan Street Festivals.

Going Back Out

This is part of the marina in El Granada, California. The guy with the beard had a wetsuit on. It looked like they were headed out for a larger fishing boat or scuba diving. This one is simmering on the easel right now.

This is part of my Boston cityscape series. We were in the Chinatown area. My focus in shooting during that trip was on the solitary person in a big city. I may tool with it a little more.

The photo for this one came from my camera phone. We were headed back home from Fort Bragg. I like to look up into the woods.

A Pair of Cooking Pears

The second pear painting.

A Cooking Pear

One of our lawyers has a farm with pear trees. Every year she shares her harvest with the office. Another lawyer noticed these pears with great leaves and suggested that I paint them. This is the second painting from the three pears she selected. Thanks to Beth. I'm trying not to overwork my pastels and leave evidence of the pastel stroke. I think it projects energy.

Evolution of a sketch

If and when I get to work from my sketches I rearrange everyone to fit the courtrooms composition. By the way the jury is out.

Too Many Cooks

I love painting restaurant workers. The white and poetic movement grabs my attention.

Small Town Square

I grew up in a small town that still had the most quaint town square. The area reminds me of an Edward Hopper painting because their are no people. There is only the evidence of people. I have painted this scene many times in watercolor. This is the first attempt in pastel. Those of you in Commerce should recognize this area.

Trash Pick Up

Side street in New York the air is crisp and the day is getting started. With that comes the noise and striking light on the truck.

Trial Sketches

Some sketches from the ongoing trial in the 331st District Court. I rarely draw the courtroom as it is. I tend to get the body language of the participants down and then construct paintings with everyone in their proper place from the sketches..

Delay Trial

This is a sketch from the Tom Delay trial taking place in Travis County. I was drawing from the audience section of the courtroom. The guy in front of me is a reporter for a local paper. In front of him is a prosecutor questioning a witness.

This is a work in progress. I posted the study last week. Its on hold (the study) for a collector who likes it.

Future

I think first and foremost that I am a figurative painter. This is s mixture of images. The girl I photographed at the first urban music festival. The water replaced the crowd.

Redwood Forest 1 (study)

This is the second painting that I worked on in my new studio at Austin Art Space. Whenever I look at a study I always want to go back in and fine tune areas. It's best to leave them as is to keep the "fresh" in the painting.

This is a sketch from a trial in progress in Travis County.

Redwood Forest 2 (study)

On our way back from Fort Bragg we usually ride a few miles through these beautiful redwoods. We normally stop to smell the air and shoot a few pictures. This was the first study completed in my new studio.

Pea Soup (study)

This is the study for two previous posts associated with coastal fog. In the pastel version I included a person to give scale to the rock formations. For reasons unknown I left the person out of the study. Its also interesting to see the differences.

Bend Waterfall (study)

This is a 9 by 12 inch study for a larger piece. The subject is a waterfall located in Bend,TX at the Colorado State Park. I remember when we were hiking down to it the park official mentioned that he had already seen a few rattlesnakes. I'm glad he did because this place was too beautiful, I did watch my step after the warning..

Like Pea Soup Revisited

I posted the pastel version of this one last week. It's the third of three paintings of this image. My palette was less muted than the original version. This to me offers peace to the viewer.
