Richmond Chick 2

We were on McDonald heading home and I saw these chickens behind a fence. Of course we had to stop for video and photos. This is one of the finished mixed media pieces that I completed of these characters. Many more will follow. Urban chcken farm...what a concept.

Pank Trim

This is just a random building that I took a fancy to and photographed. I made up the colors and street sign. To me this is a combination of Richmond, California and Charleston, South Carolina. I know that this building is on Cutting Ave in Richmond. However, the overall scheme reminds me of Charleston. Oh well it's just our artistic licenses on display. I'm not very good with perspective but that doesn't deter me. I am slowly getting more comfortable with structures and my own way of rendering them.

Hot Deals

I remember taking the photo that led to this painting. We were in the car and Pam told me to look back and to my left. This was the scene. The light and figure drew me in. This woman appeared to be simply waiting at the bus stop and taking in her surroundings. She almost seemed defensive in her posture.

Bowie and Sixth

This part of Austin like all has undergone a lot construction. The bulk of it has been condos and mixed use buildings. My gym has recently bought out another gym in Austin. I'm frequently at this intersection in the early morning. I like the reflections and light of early morning.

American Decay

I am still rattled by the results of the election. I really feel like a stranger in my country of birth. This small painting is a study of the urban landscape in California. A few years back I took some train trips with Pam to the Central Valley of California. I took the time to snap a few photos of warehouses, ports, etc. from the train.

Steeple Shadows

This is my challenge for the year: to paint more structures in the urban landscape. My perspective has always been off so I will try and improve the weakness this year.

Overpass

I drive by this scene every day on the way home from work. Traffic getting onto Mopac goes so slow that one can actually paint this while sitting in the car. Of course this was inspired by a photo that I took from my car. I rarely draw while driving. The bluebonnets were better than last years presentation. I thought the mixture of overpasses and bluebonnets gave this piece a nice edge.

Urban Sketcher

A fellow painter sat down near where I was sketching. I took a picture of her for a later painting. I liked the guy across the street that is to the left of her forehead. The attractive part was the light in the background bouncing against the darker foreground. I first did the watercolor underpainting and then followed up with Rembrandt and Terry Ludwig pastels.

Fresh

This is a New York cityscape that I did a few years ago. My cousin Carmen Michael took the photos for me. What attracted me to the image were the interactions between the couples and the guy walking out of the frame unconcerned about what holds their attention.
