Right Lane Must Turn Right

I must give my cousin Karmen credit for the photo that inspired this painting. In the past I have sent cameras to friends and family. My request was that they just fill the cameras (disposable's) up and send them back to me. This was when we used film cameras. Karmen sent me a number of images from in and around New York. I liked the signage and the street music scene.

Gloomy With Umbrellas

I love what we call gloomy days. They inspire me because one reflects a lot more. My friend Kim Bloom took this photo on one of her trips. Its always fun to paint from a different perspective. This painting was done on Pastel Premier paper. I bought it from my friend Lisa Wright who manages Asel Art here in Austin. I love buying as local as I can and Asel Art supports the local art community. I started with a watercolor underpainting and proceeded to layer on pastels. This surface, in my opinion, does not take many layers. I would suggest treating it like Canson paper. I liked working with it.

Street Hustle

A corner in the city of New York. Years ago my cousin took a bunch of photos for me to paint from. He has always had an interesting perspective. The sketch was done a few years back. I applied the pastel last week after I found the drawing.
This is a sketch from my sketchbook. I am going for a larger pastel and graphite image. These are two members of our family. I gave my nephew Cortez one of my cameras to take photos of our celebration. His perspective intrigues me.

Rainy Day New York

I have an ad in next months American Art Collector Cityscape feature. This little painting gets a lot of attention on my Fine Art America website so I decided to post it here. My friend Kim Bloom took the picture for me on one of her many travels.

King of the Corner

The man in the green shirt is what attracted me to this image. In Austin every corner has an inhabitant pf some sort. Some preach, make music, display themselves, etc.

Street Corner

My cousin Karmen took this photo for me. I actually like painting from another person's perspective. I think its healthy. He loves New York. This is from a street corner.

Trash Pick Up

Side street in New York the air is crisp and the day is getting started. With that comes the noise and striking light on the truck.

Fresh

This is a New York cityscape that I did a few years ago. My cousin Carmen Michael took the photos for me. What attracted me to the image were the interactions between the couples and the guy walking out of the frame unconcerned about what holds their attention.

Cabing It (contemplation period)

The cityscapes take a lot more time to get right. This one is marinating in my visual brain. I think one more visit and done. This is a pastel on Richeson's Premium Pastel Surface. It takes a lot of pastel to fill the tooth and the grit is very fine. This piece is New York inspired.

Cabbing It

This is my final post for 2009. A lot has happened in this decade. Some of it bad and some good. But I at least had the privilege of living on this earth. I'm almost done with this. I last worked on it on the 28th of December 2009. It is beginning to work for me. Kim from my office took the photo that inspired this painting. I look forward to posting more completed paintings in the new year and more time painting. Happy New Year.

Cabing It

I'm still toying with this one. It's on Richeson Pastel Support. I'm switching back and forth between that surface and Canson paper. This one has a primitive feel to it. Part of me wants to develop the buildings in the foreground. The other side of the debate is that the painting is about the cars not the buildings.

Outside Looking In

This piece was inspired by a photo taken in New York by one of our lawyers. I worked on Canson paper for this one. I tried to convey the roundness of the actual building with the strokes. I glazed the pastel as opposed to drawing with it. It is available on my website www.crosbysgallery.com.

I'm almost finished with this one. An office mate took this photo while visiting New York.

Rainy in New York

The attorney that offices next door to me recently took a trip to New York. I gave her two disposable cameras to use up for me. This is a study for a larger version. Kind of an exploratory piece. It interesting to see what she photographed and her perspective.
