Coastal Fog and Waves

I recently had the pleasure of moving (not) and found a lot of paintings that had not been shared or posted on my websites. This painting was completed a number of years ago. Its from Fort Bragg, California. I think the scene is near the Beachcomber Hotel. Its painted on a copper panel and was inpired by a previous plein air painting completed on one of our many birthdays celebrated there.

The Standout

This piece in addition to quite a few other miniatures will be on display and sale tomorrow from 11-6 with a small gathering from 2-6 at Austin ArtSpace. Hay Bales In Fog

Commerce is beautiful in deep fog. I was headed home one Monday and saying my goodbyes to family. This fog surrounded the landscape. I took a few shots from my car on the way to see one of my sisters. This represents two of my favorite things in a scene fog and hay bales. This type of scene and weather makes me feel cozy. I have to give a shout out to my two sisters. One has a birthday and the other has finished chemotherapy both are very strong women.

Little Veggies

I love collecting and painting still life pieces. It's working from life; but the subjects are still. Its fun to do preparatory sketches on sulphite paper. I later cover the sketches with markers to create a value sketch. I also make lots of little oil paintings of the set up. I recently bought some 4 by 5 inch copper panels. This is one of the first paintings I plan to have on display at the West Austin Studio tour this year. Small paintings are intimate and much more affordable.

Supermarket Onions

I bought these onions because I wanted to paint them. I eventually threw them out. I should have made a stew or stir fry with them. Or, I could have planted them.

Garden Path Austin

The preliminary work and structure of this painting were generated in the botanical gardens here in Austin. I worked with a Pentel brush pen on a copper panel. I liked the light and the flower bush in the background. I later added color from memory.

Deep Still Water

This scene is part of a river near Jenner, California, I was attracted to the rock formations and the colors in the water. We stopped on the side of the road for me to take photos. I recall it was near an old bridge.

Tied Up Veggies

I really haven't figured out why I like to paint radishes. I rarely if ever eat them, unless they are in a salad.

Arched Water Path

I am sharing some of my oil on copper paintings. I have finally gotten around to varnishing them and now they are ready to show (some of them). This painting is of a beach in Mendocino, California. I was attracted to the arch in the ocean. I hope to be there for the new year.

The Fog Was Warm

Over the years, I have spent many foggy days painting in Fort Bragg, California. This was painted from the balcony of our room. I recently completed varnishing a lot of my pieces on copper. It's fun to share and remember the circumstances under which they were painted.

Last year I observed and sketched this trial. It involved a lady that took medication and drove under the influence. She killed two people and injured others. She was found guilty.

Unstable Storm

This is an older painting that was inspired by northern California. Its an oil on copper piece. I was taken with how the storm stirred up the surf and the sturdy rocks.

Austin Spring Light

This painting is finally ready for a new home. When you paint on copper you have to make sure that the painting is protected from the elements. When dry, it has to be treated with a combination of Galkyd and odorless mineral spirits. I made this painting at the botanical gardens here in Austin. One of many painted there. I was attracted to the spring light on the path and trees.

Transformer Sunset

I painted this little piece while standing in Pam's kitchen looking out the window. I like including transformers as they are part of the landscape and are evidence of humans. I was attracted to the colors of the sky as the sun was setting.

Diners Needed

When I had to give this painting a name I immediately thought "no cows". Thus the title. Those of you who follow this blog know that I love hay bales. When I was home recently I actually stood out in the bot sun to sketch hay bales. I was drenched in sweat when I got back to my car. Yes I wore a hat. The scene is from Northeast Texas. I like how the copper peeps through the paint.

Pink Window

A little plein air sketch on copper. I was attracted to the windows and light on the buildings. I used both a brush and palette knife because I liked how the paint looked directly from the knife on the copper. The morning and afternoon light in Pam's neighborhood is amazing.

Wine Shadows

One of the oils I started this weekend. My previous explorations were in watercolor. I am again working on a copper surface. I bought a lot of copper to paint on about 4 years ago my goal is to use up every panel that I have and that's a lot of paintings.

Distant Bale

I have had this piece of copper sitting around so yesterday I revisited some of my hay bale photos for inspiration. I rarely paint in oils but yesterday was an oil kind of day. This scene is from North East Texas along the Sulfur Springs highway.

Watch Out

Another oil on copper. I need to paint more in oils.

California Vineyard

This is one of my oil on copper paintings. I don't know the name of the particular vineyard (my bad) but it did get my attention. I have painted this scene in both pastel and oil. I like how some of the copper peeks through the paint. I hope to have it framed and in my gallery for the West Austin Studio Tour coming this month. Available for purchase right now if you like.

Sky Changing

I like painting just before the sun starts to set. I will work in multiple mediums to get the most out of it. This was one of the three oil sketches completed during my visit to northern California last month.
