Young Americans

I love painting old photos especially if someone else took them. This is a very old family photo. It depicts my stepfathers aunt, husband and children in front of their home. I did about three paintings of this image they all have different feels.

Plein Air Choppy Waters

This is the plein air version of Choppy Waters (watercolor) which I posted a few days ago. On site I used Golden's Open Acrylics on primed Gator board. I was perched on this cliff above the water looking down at the beach and surf.

Rainy Day New York

I have an ad in next months American Art Collector Cityscape feature. This little painting gets a lot of attention on my Fine Art America website so I decided to post it here. My friend Kim Bloom took the picture for me on one of her many travels.

Inside Diva

The larger painting completed from the study posted earlier. As with any abstract image a little poetic license to deviate from the original.

Side Porch

This is the side porch of the house that I grew up in. The man is my stepfather. He loved sitting on that porch. He would get that far away look in his eyes while sitting there. I went down to visit our old home a few weeks ago. It's no longer blue.

Platform Redux

I went back in and defined the forms more to make the image less sketchy. The vantage point is the top stairs leading down to the trains.

Plein Air Upgrade I

The plein air sketch completed on site. Oil on copper.

With this piece I started out with a plein air sketch that I completed this summer. I did two six by 6 by 6 inches paintings and one 5 by 7 incher. Last Friday night I churned this one out. I'm not touching it again. This one is 20 by 20 inches and summarily kicked off the easel.

Late Waiter

This is my second visit with this image. The first version is a pastel image. I was at a stop light one Friday afternoon and saw this guy running down the sidewalk with his waiter's uniform on. He was probably headed to the Headliners Club for work.

Long Stride

Another in the series of paintings inspired from looking down from my office window. I used Golden Open Acrylics on a canvas panel. I like when the shadows are long. They tend to add another character to the piece.

Down to the Train

This Christmas Pam bought me a nice supply of Raymar panels. I have to tell you I love this surface. This is another in my subway series. I was standing at the top of the stairs as fellow passengers were going down to catch the train. I worked on this one with Golden Open Acrylics. Fun acrylics to work with and they don't dry out as fast. I sketched it out first to get rid of unnecessary details. This one is available for purchase if you are interested.

Down Below

Yes I do paint abstracts just not a lot of them. I find them harder to do because you create the subject matter from internally as opposed to externally from photos or plein air painting. This one is mixed media both watercolor and acrylic paints. I get the sense when looking at it that I am looking down from a window.
