My Way Or The Highway

A small painting completed from life last week. I had a floral arrangement on my kitchen counter last week this is one of the paintings from that setup. I also had some cherry tomatoes and cups in the setup. I will post those soon. The title came to mind when I was examining the painting before scanning it. I worked on a stone surface that works similar to the Yupo surface. I like it because you can work in multiple layers.

Light At The Bend

The photo I used for this one is of the New England area during the foliage season. I would really like to go up during that season to spend a few days shooting and painting in the area. This painting is 4 by 6 inches and I didn't work with an under painting.

I painted this picture while sitting on my sister's front porch during one of my many visits home. I worked with Masa paper that had been crinkled and gessoed. I like the almost stained glass like look that it can sometimes take on.

New Paths

I started this painting during the West Tour and haven't felt the need to touch it again. Its from the New England foliage season which seems to peak in October. My friend Jim took the photos for me years ago and I still use them for inspiration. I should have done more plein air painting while I lived there.

Bus Station Guardian

A few years ago I had to do a teaching gig in Providence, Rhode Island. Of course I had my cameras. Before and after teaching I walked around the city to take it in. This statue was at the bus station close to my hotel. It appeared to be guarding the people waiting on transport to various and sundry places. The visit was nostalgic as I later took a Greyhound bus into Boston to visit with friends I hadn't seen in what felt like forever.

The Woods

Years ago I persuaded a friend of mine in the New England area to get out and take photos of the foliage for me. He sent me two disposable cameras worth of images (thank you Jim). I still revisit those images for inspiration.

Bridge Cover

Years ago I did a lot of alternative process photography. This is a combination of polaroid film transfer and pastel on watercolor paper. When I had access to a darkroom I was around people who still shot with film and were very process oriented. I really should continue to explore photography more. Maybe when I retire from the day job.

Covered Bridge

A few years ago my friends Janet and Jim Butterfield drove around New England during foliage season taking picture for me. This week I was playing with a polaroid transfer of one of the images he took for me. I decided the image would translate well into a pastel. This is a small study.

Essex, Mass in early spring 2006 I guess .

This little image is from my days in Swampscott, Massachusetts. I spent many days in this little cove just enjoying the sound of the ocean and my insignificance.

Essex Thaw

A few years ago I was visiting friends in Essex, MA. I spent the day photographing the area. I worked with medium format film and digital images. I now have a studio space maybe I will do a showing of the photos and paintings there. I loved the cool weather and the countryside. It made me homesick as I did spend some formative years there. The first version was done in watercolor. This is oil on copper.
